1937: King George VI Coronation

King George VI (formerly Prince Albert) was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. On the controversial abdication of his eldest brother, Edward VIII, he was proclaimed King George VI, using one of his middle names (George) instead of his first name, Albert.

King George VI's coronation was held on 12 May 1937 - the same date chosen for the coronation of his brother Edward VIII before his abdication.

Following his death in 1952 and the coronation of their daughter, his wife, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, became known as 'Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother', to avoid confusion with her daughter (Queen Elizabeth II).
