Windrush 75 Activity Day
Windrush 75 Activity Day was hosted at the Limelight Centre, Old Trafford on Wednesday 21 June 2023. Featuring Lord Kitchener and Windrush, Calypso & Cricket displays; archival footage; windrush themed children's activity sheets; new book stock; Dr Anthony Joseph author talk; live steel pan music and calypso records.
The event followed a commemorative blue plaque unveiling for former Trafford resident and legendary calypso singer Lord Kitchener (Aldwyn Roberts). The ceremony was attended by Trafford's new mayor Councillor Dolores O'Sullivan, Council Leader Tom Ross, dignitaries, family members, local community members and residents. A special news report from BBC North West Tonight documented the event which honoured Lord Kitchener, The Grandmaster of Calypso music.
Mayor Dolores O'Sullivan officially commenced the blue plaque ceremony which includes readings from Dr Ken McIntyre, Doretta Maynard and Lord Kitchener's ficitonal biographer Dr Anthony Joseph. Mayor O'Sullivan and Dr Ken McIntyre officially unveiled the plaque to the people of Trafford at 2.30pm, 21 June 2023. The date marked the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush arriving in Britain in 1948, in which Lord Kitchener was a passenger.
